Creative Minds :: meet Ena Swan

1. Please tell us about your art and yourself: who are you, what do you do, how did you start your creative life?

My name is Liz LaFreniere, my work is ethereal, painterly Photography. I sell my work on Etsy at Ena &the Swan Photography. I started my creative life with a index card. I folded it in half, traced a half heart shape and cut it, then discarded it and made the leftovers two brown birds facing one another with beaks touching. I was 5 years old.

2. How do you come up with an idea for a piece ?

Like all artists’ on some level of consciousness I am inspired by other Artists of all types. But personally, probably because of my background as a Fine Art Painter, I start with a simple idea of a color or shape or even line. Also, stories, music and movies are in the mix.

3. Do you have living (or RIP) artists you are inspired from ?

Many of my contemporary photographers whose work I see on Flickr, no famous artists really, though my studio wall is covered with cutouts from fashion magazines, reproductions of paintings and the work of my 11 year daughter Audrey.

4. Do you have any creating ritual ?

Not really. Sometimes driven by a general concept I setup my tripod, dress-up in something (generally vintage), grab my remote and just click off 100 pics or so. Often though my work has been a derivative of a plain old snapshot.

5. Do you have a studio or creative place-room-corner ? How does it impact your art ?

Well yes and no. I have a ‘room’ but it’s in a sad state of limbo. We are reorganizing our house. But in it’s past it was a very pale pink room with French doors on both sides and a pale wood floor. Once stocked with a large easel and paints, then once I started shooting it gained a desk, computer, etc. It has always had a wall of inspirational art and Christmas lights surrounding the ceiling. My best work is done in a secluded, quiet, calming environment.

6. What would be your top 5 creative inspirations? (ie: websites, book, music, writer, people, etc.)

My life, my background as a painter, music, poems & books, and movies, in that order..

7. What are you into at the moment ? Do you have any art obsessions ?

No obsessions, I have always wanted to make a movie and I often have grand concepts that do not come in to fruition. I tend to stay close to home, I’m a bit neurotic in that regard, and my work tends to be sporadic. The ideas often come out of no conscious place or from a simple thing like the color blue or a piece of clothing.

8. Any dreams or project for the future?

Well there’s that movie (j/k), no clear projects currently though I’d like to do some collaborative work with other female photographers. I also hope to start painting again.

9. Do you have any creative inspirational –quote to share ?

How about ‘…and then I drew a new face and I laughed’.

10. How do you keep your creative-juices flowing ?

I surf the web, watch movies (it’s an addiction), make playlists from movie soundtracks and sometimes just buy a cute dress.

11. How does the online world impact your art? Would it be the same if you didn’t expose your art online?

The web is an odd bird. It can very easily create a virtual life when you’re an artist. Your works on this blog or that web-zine. You really don’t have to leave your home at all and you can gain fame. Weird huh? Not a good thing for a recluse like me. But, if it didn’t exist I would have never sold a single piece of art.

12. How do you promote your work?

This is not a area I like honestly. I have an online store that just re-opened after many years of personal hardships. I also submit occasionally to online web-zines and have been featured on them and blogs. I’ve had a few shows also. And I am now finally getting into social networking and have a fanpage on Facebook and Twitter.

13. Do you have creative pet-peeves?

Hitting a dead end, you know ‘writer’s block’. Also, it frustrates me when people think they are the first one to do something. So many artists existed before us and as a professor once told me, ‘there are no new ideas in art, only new interpretations’.

14. How do you manage the business-side of your art?

Well, some social networking, actually mainly that way via the web and word of mouth. I have also been involved with several groups of women that support one another through promotion via blogs, etc. and we have made collaborative books together.

15. Any advice creative-wise for our readers?

Experience as much of life as can. Be it through the ‘looking glass’’ of your house window or through contact with other people and don’t be afraid to put your life into your art.

Thanks Liz! Your photographs are gorgeous, I can really feel your painting background throught your use of texture and composition. Also, I use to sing that song to my son while I was pregnant; isn’t it a happy-vibes song? Intrigue and want to see more? You should go then to Liz’s Etsy shop, website, blog and more! Creative Minds :: meet Sarah Mercer

1.Please tell us about your art and yourself: who are you, what do you do, how did you start your creative life?

Hello! I am 37 years old and a full time student, majoring in philosophy, at a local university. I guess I have always been somewhat creative but haven’t had a way to really express it sufficiently, then I purchased a camera about 3 years ago. Although the camera sat on a shelf for a few months, it was when I decided to start a 365 self portrait challenge that my creativity started to evolve. I discovered a way to be creative and express how I am feeling at the same time!

2.How do you come up with an idea for a piece ?

This is a difficult question to answer as sometimes an idea just pops into my head, other times I take inspiration from something I see, hear, or how I am feeling.

3. Do you have living (or RIP) artists you are inspired from ?

Primarily I take my inspiration from the many talented photographers on www.flickr.com. Also I have been scouring as many photography books as I can get my hands on – currently Helmut Newton is a fav!

4.Do you have any creating ritual ?

Not a ritual per se, I usually just get a vision or idea in my head and just try to emulate it through my photographs. However, when I do get an idea I tend to obsess about it until I can get home and take the actual photograph.

5.Do you have a studio or creative place-room-corner ? How does it impact your art ?

I have just moved into a new condominium with an amazing amount of natural light so I am taking advantage of that as much as possible. I guess my whole condo is my studio at the moment! I don’t think it has any impact on my art or the creation process as I have never had the benefit of using a studio. Although not having a studio has made me come up with some creative ideas for the use of space etc.

6.What would be your top 5 creative inspirations? (ie: websites, book, music, writer, people, etc.)

My top 5 creative inspirations are: Flickr (of course), my friends and family, the world around me, the urban landscape, Helmut Newton (as mentioned above)

7.What are you into at the moment ? Do you have any art obsessions ?

I am currently experimenting with erotic photography, using myself as a subject. I love to capture images in B&W – I suppose that could be an art obsession. I have been trying to get my hands on anything I can find on one of the masters of the genre: Helmut Newton.

8.Any dreams or project for the future?

I have my first show coming up in September, I also am working on revamping my website and setting up an Etsy shop.

9.Do you have any creative inspirational –quote ?

The only quote that has really struck me is a classic Mae West quote: “He who hesitates is a damned fool.” I try to lead my life this way at the very least. ;)

10. Any advice creative-wise for our readers ?

I think the best advice I can give is to be true to yourself when creating and not to compromise your vision because of worry about what other people will think.

Thanks Sarah for your insights! Your pictures are so crips and fashion like. I’m loving the hight contrast and also, the B & W! Want more? I suggest you head over to Sarah’s website, her flikr account or follow her on Twitter.

Creative Minds :: meet Cori Dantini

1. Please tell us about your art and yourself: who are you, what do you do, how did you start your creative life?

My name is Cori Dantini. I live and work in a town called Pullman in Washington state, which is nestled in the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse.

I graduated with a BFA in art from WSU (which is also in Pullman), with a major emphasis in painting and a minor in printmaking.

Since graduating from college I have done everything in my power to make art a part of my living. I have designed clip art, greeting cards (which I still do), done commercial work (most exciting client… Starbucks), and now I am creating mixed media paintings for art/craft fairs and my etsy shop, which I sell (hopefully) and then turn into archival prints.

I consider my little mixed media pieces to be visual poems. I know it sounds strange, but I fully enjoy the uncomfortable moments, the smaller parts of the greater whole. I think a lot of truth can be found there. In my work I am trying to accomplish the capturing of those moments, or breaths, the looks that you “think” you may have seen, or that deep deep sigh that happens way in the background (sometimes). What I am hoping to do in making these little pieces is to hand you that moment and have you think your own thoughts about them, and then with each and every meeting we are creating our own new truth (together).

2. How do you come up with an idea for a piece ?

I used to plan things out, sketch and think all of my thoughts before I even began, but what I discovered was that my work wasn’t very fun or spontaneous (to look at or to make,) so years ago I decided to stop doing it that way. So now, I am not a planner. I am a maker.

Basically, I begin by creating a background out of vintage papers, then I put that pencil down and I start to draw, and I see what the person or animal looks like, or I will find something written on the pages I am drawing on, and that will spark something which will send me down a certain path (which I follow like an obedient dog!).

I do my very best to follow my imagination. Sometimes it works, and other times, it doesn’t (and mostly I am okay with that).

3. Do you have living (or RIP) artists you are inspired from ?

I have so many people and things that inspire me… I feel like I always say the same ones, Amanda Blake, Camilla Engman, Calef Brown to name a few. But a new one I have is Squeak Carnwath, she is amazing (and inspiring).

4. Do you have any creating ritual ?

When I begin a project or start a new series of paintings I HAVE to start with a clean studio. If I don’t, I can’t begin… so the very first thing is a BIG cleaning/organizing. I should also add that I don’t clean while I am in the middle of the project, so the mess can become quite out of hand, but for some reason it does not bother me while I am in the process of creating. Maybe it is just knowing that when I am done, I will clean again.

5. Do you have a studio or creative place-room-corner ? How does it impact your art ?

I have a Fairly generous sized studio (300 square feet or so), and it is such a blessing. I am surrounded by all of my stuff at all times and I find this to be very helpful. Something I always say is, if you don’t have it you can’t use it. So there is a lot of stuff around here (I might add I hardly use any of it, but it doesn’t stop me from gathering it all up). Plus I have big plans for some found object / assemblage pieces some day.

6. What would be your top 5 creative inspirations?

  1. well, I love music that fills you up (piano music and traditional middle eastern music are two big favorites): for me the right kind of music can open up spaces that are sort of hard to tap into.
  2. I also like to look at other people’s artwork, but find I suck all that info in so deeply that I need to be careful. I don’t do it on purpose, but sometimes images or compositions (line work even) will get in my head and then it will come pouring out at random, so I have to be careful.
  3. I love E.E. Cummings, he writes the most beautiful (open ended) sentences.
  4. My son… he says and does the most amazing things. He has coined many interesting ideas, for example a while back he said to me his earsight isn’t very good. In a million years I would never think a thing like that. Such a beautiful little thought.
  5. A good walk can do wonders as well.

7. What are you into at the moment ? Do you have any art obsessions ?

  • I am in love with the first page of an old book (the page where someone with some fantastic name like delores would sign that book with her lovely old fashioned penmanship).
  • I am really into the night sky right now. I am painting people who are wearing it, birds that are filled up with it… I am pondering balloons and sacks that people are dragging around that are filled up with it. It seems to symbolize for me, potential.
  • Rulers.
  • I am really loving the new built to spill album called There Is No Enemy, particularly song two ( Hindsight ).

8. Any dreams or project for the future?

Well, I am in the process of making one of my dreams come true at the moment. I just recently learned that I have been selected to be part of the cherry creek art festival (in Denver), as part of their emerging artists program. It is a huge and wonderful art fair, that frankly is the best I have ever been too. It is something I have always told myself that I would try and do if I ever became brave enough to tackle the art/craft fair world (which I just did this past summer on a local level).

So this year I decided I would throw in my hat (what did I have to lose right?). I ABSOLUTELY did not think I would get in, but I am always saying to everyone that you can’t do anything if you don’t throw your hat in… so I did, and I got in! Honestly, I couldn’t believe it ! So now… I am painting like mad. My goal is to show up with over 100 paintings, mostly because I have NO idea how many I will need. So better to have too many than not enough.

9. Any advice creative-wise for our readers ?

I say just make stuff… good or bad. If it is good, GREAT, if it is bad, make more ! Just do it… Make. Make. Make.

I have a theory that with everything you make, you will learn a little something from it. If you do it long enough, you will learn a lot, and become better and better at what you do. So go ahead and make stuff.

You have nothing to lose and a lot to learn (from yourself).

Thanks Cori! Your art is truly poetic, and I totally can relate to the uncomfortables creative moments and the messy studio! Creation in chaos! You can find Cori’s creation in her two Etsy shops, one is Bright and colorful with print of her oil paintings, the other one a bit more color-subtil (see image above), with more poetic images. She also has a blog where you can follow her illustrated musings.

Creative Mind :: meet Yuliya

I’m so exited to get this column going again, it has made me discover AMAZING artists from every art sphere, and I truly hope you enjoy it also! Please drop me a line if you want to be featured!

1. What do you create ? Please tell us about your art.

I create My Reality. My Art, it is me, something without what I cannot exist. I draw on all my free time; What I love most is to work with wonderful colored papers, archival inks and acrylic, embellishing artwork with crystals and precious metal leafing. I love to draw communication between my characters, different happenings and relationships. I put meaning in each tiny detail of the artwork, every flower or connection has its reason to be. The magic of my art is that I don’t use any sketch or pencil: everything you see is created pure, in one moment, without any change.
Sometimes, I love to play with my image digitaly; I draw with a graphic tablet, use pieces of photographs and use all the magic of Photoshop to realize my idea as best as possible!

2. How do you come up with an idea for a piece ?

It always comes unexpectedly while I live my day-to-day life: I can see shapes, sense smells, hear a sound or understand something new and, bingo! The idea is ready in my head. And then I feel the urge to pick up my ink pen and start creating immediately! If I do not get a chance to do it, a hunger for drawing is growing in me and then I am just not able to concentrate on anything else :) I have to draw.

3- Do you have any creating ritual ?

I give special attention to all my drawing tools; I love to feel the paper, hold my brushes, care for paints and I make them always available to me so I feel I have all necessary tools to make my imagination a reality.

4- Do you have a studio or creative place-room-corner ? How does it impact your art ?

I do! I create in my Shangri-La! I feel amazingly comfortable and cozy, there is kind of connection between me and my space. I will draw in any place though, I have tried lots and lots of them where least comfortable, but as soon as I start drawing, everything else vanishes. My main thing is to Create.

5- Do you have any books, website, media or music that inspires you ?

Yes I have a person that inspires and always supports me, Genius Sculptor and Wonderful Personality – My Husband.

6- What are you  into at the moment ?

Currently I am going through a very creative time of my live, I draw a lot and am very happy, exited and very busy with establishing my new shop on Etsy.

7- Any dreams or project for the future?

I think after all what is said above the answer is obvious :) I dream to create more of my personal art, be able to dedicate to it full time, and my first step is my new shop, which is already helping me to build foundation to realize this dream!

Thanks Yuliya! I can’t get over the details and the complexity of your images (and to think you DON’T do a sketche before diving in! Amazing talent!) To appreciate Yuliya’s art, please visit her Etsy shop, her blog, her Flickr account and connect with her on Facebook!
